Police in Nkhata Bay have confirmed to AIH News that two people have lost their lives after drowning in two seperate incidents.
According to Nkhata Bay Police Publist, Cecilia Mfune said a 47 year old man identified as Reuben Phiri of Kakhongwe Village under Traditional Authority Mankhambira in Nkhata Bay district died after he drowned into Kachinya river.
“The deceased left his house on Thursday afternoon to the said river for fishing. After sometime his son followed him and he was surprised to see his father’s cap floating on stagnant water while the deceased was under the waters. He informed the elders who rushed to the scene only to find him already dead”, said Cecilia.
The matter was reported to police and scene was visited together with medical personnel who confirmed death was due to suffocation.
Nkhata Bay Publist further said another similar accident happened at Zilakomwa Village which is under Traditional Authority Zilakomwa in the district after a 12 year old boy, Mavuto Simwaka also died after drowning.
“His father said the boy was epileptic, he left home on Thursday to unknown destination without the knowledge of his parents”, said Cecilia.
She added, “he did not return home until 19:00hrs and this prompted his family and other community members to conduct a search. He was later found floating in unfinished pit latrine which was full of rain water”, she affirmed.
Police and medical personnel visited the scene and death was due to suffocation.
