Angry students have torched a general building which comprises administration offices and the bursar’s office at Thyolo Secondary School, Thyolo police Sub-Inspector Amos Tione has confirmed, saying the incident took place last night.
Sub-Inspector Amos Tione says the students have also destroyed hostels, a matron’s house, a dining room and part of the headmaster’s house.
The Thyolo police PRO says preliminary investigations indicate that the students are angry that “their places have been replaced by students from other districts”.
It is said that some students had been sent on suspension due to indiscipline, with reasons ranging from use of cellphone, teasing and bullying.
According to preliminary investigations, the suspended students were angered following allegations upon their return that their places at the institution had been filled by other students from other districts.
Later they destroyed the school’s administration block before setting alight some hostels, matron’s house, dining room and part of the headmaster’s house.
A source in the district told aihnews.com that the damage is extensive, most offices have been gutted to ashes destroying everything in them including stationery & office equipment like printers, photocopiers, fridges etc, “The school is at a standstill! Pictorial views to follow later, We’re literally traumatized”
Four students have so far been arrested in connection to the incident.
