The Ministry of Natural Resources Energy and Mining’s Environmental Affairs Dept has effected closure of Nutricom Food and Beverages Company Limited for failure to comply with Section72.

As read on Section 42 of the Environmental Management Act (EMA) of 1996, ministry officials says the company’s continued disposal of untreated waste water into the environment more specifically into Chankhandwe River / lilongwe thereby compromising the river’s water quality.

Secondly, despite being warned severally, Nutricom Food and Beverages Company Ltd has on several separate occasions been warned and cautioned on its longstanding stance of not treating its waste water effluent before discharging the same into environment.

The company also had maintained its stance of not having an industrial waste water pre- treatment plant before the effluent is discharged into the environment. This is a condition which is well provided for in the EMA in order to protect and promote the ever existing symbiotical relationship that exists in any ecological setting in order to enhance the health of micro-organisms and other living things within an environment.

It is against this background that the Director of Environmental Affairs Dept was compelled to issue a Closure Order and further order the company to pay MK1,000,000.00 fine for non compliance of the existing provisions of the EMA of 1996.

The EAD is since warning any industrial institution to at all time try to comply to the provisions as provided for in the EMA in order to protect the environment as any reluctance or neglect will attract closure of the premise in question. Further the EAD, requests all those in any industrial operation to refrain from reckless discharge of any untreated wastewater into the environment as it is hazardous both to an individual’s health and that of all other living things including micro organisms in the soil.

The EAD has also stressed that untill when the company constructs a properly designed waste water treatment plant approved by line authorities, when a comprehensive environmental audit of the factory is submited to the EAD and when a water abstraction permit for the borehole at the company premises is obtained, Nutricom food and Beverages company remains closed.
