Towers moyo won after she emerged a winner to Rhodes Scholarship (to Oxford University) Constituency of Southern Africa, covering Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia and Swaziland.
There were 9 candidates at final interviews in Johannesburg and she emerged best in the region.
In his congratulations message Dr Mathews mtumbuka said this selection is a big statement about Malawi, “Our education system, despite its major flaws, is still solid with the residue fabric especially at university level”.
Towera becomes the 8th Malawian Rhodes Scholar in 19 years since Charles Kapalamula became first Malawian Rhodes Scholar in year 2000.
Malawi has produced 8 Rhodes Scholars with the other 4 countries producing 9 or10 Rhodes Scholars during the period (in 1 or 2 years the scholarship was not awarded as noone reached the standard required).
“When I was on the selection panel a few years ago, other panelists would ask me what is so special about Malawi’s education system that produces such incredibly great Rhodes candidates” said mtumbuka.
Towera is expected to enter the great University of Oxford late 2020.
Towera 22 years old young female IT Engineer works for Reserve Bank of Malawi as Systems and Software Engineer.
